Life of Jane Goodall

In London, England April 3, 1934 , Valerie Jane Goodall was born ( Février, 1999, p.1 ). Jane's father is Mortimer Goodall, her mother is Vanne Goodall, and her little sister is Judy Goodall. ( Jane Goodall Institute, 2003, p.2 ). During that time, there was a war going on between Germany and Poland. Jane’s father had entered in commission to fight for his country, which was England. Consequently, Jane was without her father for some time ( Jane Goodall Institute, 2003, p.4 ). While Jane’s father was gone, she, her mother, and Judy along with two aunts and often an uncle went to live with their maternal grandmother. Because there were three beautiful birches outside their grandmother's home, they called the house “The Birches” which still today, Jane calls home ( Jane Goodall Institute, 2003, p.5 ).

Jane was always concerned about the war that was going on and loved to hear the words of Sir Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of England on the radio ( Jane Goodall Institute, 2003, p.7 ). The war had finally ended and so did Jane’s mother and father. They had divorced. Jane and Judy were then raised by aunts, their grandmother and uncle, but they were mostly with their mother ( Jane Goodall Institute, 2003, p.9 ). Jane Goodall quotes, “Like most children before television and video games, I used to spend most of my time out in the garden learning about nature. My family didn’t have any money, but that was fine. We had enough to eat, we had clothes, and we had so much laughter, fun, and love“. ( Jane Goodall Institute, 2003, p.10 )

In fact, Jane loved nature so much she, her younger sister Judy, her best friend Sally, and Sally’s sister made an alligator club so they can learn more about nature ( Jane Goodall Institute, 2003, p.8 ). So what did Jane Goodall want to be when she grew up? Jane quotes, “You all know that I had a dream when I was growing up, and the dream was that I wanted to go to Africa and live with animals and write books about them. And that dream really got strengthened because I read about Dr. Dolittle and I read about Tarzan and I fell in love with Tarzan. I thought I could be a better mate myself. But that wasn’t the only dream that I had. That was the strongest dream. But I dreamed a lot about working with animals. There was a time when I actually dreamed about being a missionary in Russia because it was very dangerous in those days to be in Russia. I also used to dream about going to Canada. I had a passion at one time for wolves and wolverines and animals like that. I also had a passion for the idea of going to South America, living in what they call “The Green Hell”. That was the Amazon jungle which in those days was completely unexplored. So I think most of my dreams were about animals, adventure, and travel and things like that“.  ( Jane Goodall Institute, 2003, p.9 ).

When Jane grew up, she graduated from high school but her and her family couldn’t afford to send her to a university. Because they couldn’t afford a university, Jane took a secretarial course and during her spare time, she would go to the Natural History Museum in London. Afther looking through all the exhibits and observing the museum, she knew that going to Africa was what she wanted.
